From a very young age, I have possessed a high amount of physical energy. My parents recognized such a trait early in my strong expression of controlled body manipulation, such as headstands, handstands, cartwheels, summersaults, and other basic tumbling activities.
Since most parents encourage their children to take part in some kind of organized physical activity, my parents suggested that I try gymnastics. After researching, they found a program for beginning gymnasts at our local YMCA.
I was one of a handful of children. And was in the minority being a male. Practice was once a week on Saturdays. Basic tumbling techniques were taught with the exception of the balance beam. And yes they did make me do the balance beam... even though it is a female event.
The instructor soon realized that their facility did not have the tools to advance my rapidly increasing ability and interest in the sport. The gymnastics instructor spoke with my parents informing them of other, better equipped, facilities that would be able to help me successfully progress in the sport.
