Given my parents religious upbringing, they both agreed that all their children should attend Catholic schools. Ascension Elementary School was my first educational experience. I attended the Catholic elementary school from grades pre-k through eighth.
I started my studies in the company of my older brother. He was three years ahead of me so I would only see him on the walk to and home from school. As the years passed my younger sister came to join us in attending Ascension. Unfortunately, I never got to attend the school at the same time as my younger brother.
The walks to and from school created a bond between us siblings. My older brother and I would stop off at the neighborhood corner store to play arcade styled video games. And once my younger sister was of age to attend school, I would share the candy that I bought with her to keep her from telling my parents, that the money given to me for milk was being used on other less nutritious pleasures.
I've since been informed that Ascension Elementary School was closed due to financial issues. When you're young you never think that things will change. You believe that things will exist forever. As we age, we come to realize that this in not true and that things do change and disappear. It's regrettable that neither my siblings nor I will ever be able to walk down memory lane and revisit the beginning of our educational endeavors. The beauty of the situation, however, is that memories cannot be taken from you. Those elementary school memories will always remain even as life continues to present steadfast variations.
