My first assignment for my Computer Music and Multimedia course was to score a short silent film. Patrick, my instructor provided a link to some short silent films by the filmmaker Gorge Melies. A couple of the students, including myself, inquired whether we were able to use a short film of our choice. Patrick agreed, cautioning us about copyright laws, adding that the film would also require approval from him.
Enthusiastic about the assignment, considering my extreme interest in music and motion pictures, I started researching short films. I happened to stumble upon a film titled Brüderlich by German director Sebastian Matthias Weißbach. I was immediately drawn in by the sophistication of the cinematography. It's beautiful muted color tones specifically. Although a majority of the films from the web search were silent this particular film had an original score composed by Ben Rössler. I sought out Sebastian, who then contacted Ben Rössler, asking for permission to create an variational score for the film. Sebastian responded saying that both Ben and him approved me using the film for purposes relative to my Computer Music and Multimedia assignment. Ecstatic, I began condensing the twelve minute film into a five minute, time allotted for class presentation of the project, version.
I will be posting my variation of the score shortly.
Below is the link to the original film and socre:
Film: "Brüderlich." by Sebastian Matthias Weißbach, 2008, Nur für Rosi.Filme. - Original Score: Ben Rössler.
