Roller Derby Girls

I had mentioned in an earlier post how relocation lends itself to expose one to new experiences. Shortly after a recent relocation, I became aware of the reality of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.

Anticipation grew as I patiently waited for the home team's tournament day to arrive. It was scheduled for a Sunday, midday, so work was not an issue of interference. The tournament was held at a large skating arena positioned on top of a hill. As I entered the arena I was taken back by the amount of people already present. I myself was a bit early, not wanting to miss a moment.

I eagerly searched for place to sit, as I had noticed that a majority of the favorable seats were already taken. I found a perfect spot on the far corner of the arena positioned just inches away from the home team.

I throughly enjoyed my first live Roller Derby Tournament. And although the concept of the game had been quickly announced at the beginning of the tournament, the announcer's swift review inspired my to gain a better understanding of the history behind and rules involved in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.

Below are a couple of silhouettes from the tournament.
