The Oboe

Shortly after my initiation with the band, I was told that the orchestral percussion opening would be temporary and was advised, by the band director, to choose an instrument that would eventually become my full time performance position.

The CSA band consisted of a majority of typically played instruments such as flutes and clarinets in the woodwind section, and trumpets and trombones in the brass section. Note that orchestral strings rehearsed at a different time and location altogether. After taking the band's instrumental inventory, I decided that I was interested in studying either the oboe or the french horn. I chose these two particular instruments relative to their timbre, quality of sound, as well as their vacant positions.

The band director and I had a meeting regarding my choices. I told him that I was interested in instruments whose sound production fell within a mid to low range, when analyzing instrumental range within the sound spectrum, such as the oboe or the french horn. He told me that the oboe was a great choice because the school was able to provide me with one to study with.

So while I continued to fill the temporary orchestral percussion position, I began to study the oboe in hopes to find a stable performance position in the CSA band.
