Modest Mussorgsky

Modest Mussorgsky, a Russian composer, is one of my favorite composers from the Romantic Period.

Mussorgsky's orchestral works, in my opinion, have an almost flawless balance between rhythm and melody. I lead with the word rhythm which conveys my primary attraction to his compositions. I feel that many composers posses strength in either one or the other of the two mentioned musical elements. And that very few are able to execute compositions that effectively create a balance between the two.

Night on Bald Mountain, and movement No. 9, The Hut on Fowl's Legs, from Pictures at an Exhibition are two of my favorite compositions of his. Both, in my opinion, are superior examples of his gift to integrate musical elements such as rhythm and melody successfully.
