THRUST (Original)

March 18th 2011 marked the launch of the THRUST Series project. It began as a pre assembled percussive section from that of a prior project attempt. I was once told by a composition teacher that, as a composer, you will write a lot of garbage before you get to the good stuff.

While at work, a simple two note motif, a brief melodic or rhythmic formula, presented itself. This simple motif inspired a thematic passage whose primary focus was on the bending of the theme's pitches. This is where the project became challenging. To hear something in your head is one thing, however, to attempt to translate an idea into a concrete entity is another. I ran with the idea as it seemed simple enough, however, this "simple" idea of bending the theme's pitches was, in reality, quite complex. After conducting some research I soon discovered that my instrument selection, for the theme, would significantly decrease due to semitone settings or lack there of. I reluctantly settled on a instrument that would allow me to bend any pitch at least five semi tones, or 5/12 of an octave, both ascending and descending. Finally, I created a chart that would roughly estimate a figure range necessary for precise use of the pitch bend continuos controller.

After much persistence and refinement the THRUST Series project was finally complete.

Thus without further ado, I present to you. A world premier. The 1st promotional release from the THRUST series. THRUST (Original).
