I wanted to follow in the footsteps of the Original Change cover for the Change (TA Variation) cover. The idea with the Original cover was that Change was being viewed as day and night. This was illustrated with the very apparent contrast in my sweater and the background. My position of resistance was illustrated by my hands being pressed against the wall. This aligns with the lyrics “I can’t hold it back.” Finally, The scowl on my face illustrated a sense of skepticism. Aligning with that last set of lyrics in the chorus “Change is for the best, They claim. But I’ll complain. That it isn’t for me.”
Keeping those key elements in mind I decided to again create a portrait where there was an apparent contrast, day and night. However, this time I decided to create the contrast with depth of field. Meaning one side of the portrait was more in focus then the other. With the Change (TA Variation) cover I achieved this by using of my left hand, almost outlining my face, as a divider. If you look closely you can see that everything to the right of my face is more vivid and sharp, and everything to the left of it is more dull and soft.
The idea of a day and night contrast, achieved with depth of field, aligns with the lyrics “This is all inside your mind, you realize. If you notice my head is to the right of my hand placing it with the day, more vivid and sharp, section. This symbolizes that one views one’s perspective before change as vivid and sharp or clear. And because the title Change is within the night, more dull and soft, section, one views this as unclear. Equating to things that are clear or known are good and things that are unclear or unknown are bad. So one’s perspective of change being viewed as bad, is “all within your mind.” And again there is a scowl on my face illustrating skepticism which this time is more apparent in the squinting of the eyes.
Another element that I wanted to keep was the idea of resistance. So this time I decided to use the title Change as if it where symbolic of the idea of actual change. And that my hands create resistance by restraining Change within them. The idea that Change is almost hovering in between my hands, represents a form of energy, and this energy again aligns with the lyrics “I can’t hold it back.”
If you recall in my Change Lyric Video Explained post I spoke of the idea of the final lyrics of the video dividing and becoming two perspectives. And that the higher of the two represents a new perspective which is higher than or above one’s old perspective. Another significance of the title Change, in the Change (TA Variation) cover, hovering above my head was that a new perspective lies within reach but one’s resistance to change prevents one from every experiencing it.
