For most of my musical career I’ve viewed myself primarily as a composer. And it was not until recently that I began to take my voice more seriously. Because I have a tendency to endlessly layer my songs, almost to the point to where I never see a song as complete, I began to view my voice as an additional instrument that I could use as a unique layer. I noticed that when I would hear a new layer in my head that sometimes when I would sing it out loud, I couldn’t find an instrument to reproduce the sound I heard. This is when I concluded that using my voice as the instrument was the best choice.
Sadly I’ve been experiencing some throat and vocal symptoms that are very concerning. It started several months ago when I was doing some higher quality vocal recording. I notice the next day my throat was very sore and it was very difficult for me to sing. So naturally I concluded is was just voice misuse and that resting my voice would be sufficient. However I began to develop added symptoms where my throat was sore while using speaking voice. So this is when I decided to go see a doctor.
When I got to my appointment with the ear nose and throat specialist the doctor asked me what symptoms I was experiencing. I told him is started out with a reoccurring pain in the left side of my neck which later developed into a pain in the back of my throat near my epiglottis. This then branched out into in my lower jaw and and my lower ear region. Which was right around the time I began pain here here here here here here here here (Laughs). The doctor then proceeded to do a laryngoscopy. This is a procedure that allows the doctor to examine your voice box or larynx and vocal chords with a scope. So he came back with a small device which he proceeded to insert into my *right (*correction I still don’t know my left from my right!) nostril. And because the nasal passage is connect to the eyes via the tear ducts, I feel like a flight attendant: (Mimicking flight attendant) “In the case of an emergency please proceed to the exit nearest you.” It’s natural for your eyes to tear up when the nasal passage is being touched. So here I am sitting in the chair balling my right eye out while trying to speak and sing for the doctor. (Mimicking flight attendant) “Please proceed to the exit nearest you.”
The good news is that the doctor said the symptoms as far as he could tell are not related to my voice box and vocal chords. And because my voice is in good shape at the moment I’m preparing my first cover song for you guys. I’ve decided on Frankie Avalon’s A boy without a girl. And Although A boy without his voice would not be the end of his musical career it would be a significant loss and a huge challenge to overcome So I’m extremely grateful even tough I’m experiencing some throat symptoms to have my voice. And I hope to to have my voice for a long time to come.
