Stringed Orchestra

Oboe lessons were not provided other then the quick tutorial on how to care for and replace the double reeds. So once again, I found my self in the midst of a transition to an alternate major. This time, however, I required that I receive personal instruction on the instrument.

After informing my music advisor that my second instrument of choice for a performance major was the cello, I was referred to the director of the stringed department. The director of strings was a tall women with curly blond hair who was contrabass, or bass, performance graduate from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Once informed of my interest in studying the cello, her instant enthusiasm made it transparent how eager she was to begin lessons with me, as all the students wanted to study the violin.

The transition to stringed orchestra marked the first time that I truly felt stability within my declared major since beginning my studies at the Cleveland School of the Arts. Strings rehearsed ever morning five days a week. Classes began with the director of strings closely observing and swiftly assisting all students in their efforts to tune their instruments.
